Today, the United States Olympic team finished with the most gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics. The U.S. team won 39 gold medals, just passing China, which won 38 gold medals. In total medals (gold, silver, and bronze), the United States won 113, and China won 88. Japan came in third with 27 gold and 58 medals total.

Previously trailing China, the United States’ wins in women’s basketball, volleyball, and cycling brought three more gold medals. These three medals pulled ahead of China and marked the United States’ first gold medal in women’s volleyball.

The United States dominated fencing, shooting, surfing, swimming, taekwondo, basketball, artistic gymnastics, discus, shot put, pole vault, water polo, and wresting.
